The latest Skills for Care report shows around 30% turnover rate of staff in social care. Care workers that I have spoken to and data from some of our surveys and research shows that the greatest problem is retention. Care workers burn out, are paid peanuts for highly skilled and demanding work and looked down at by society. We must ensure that people want to remain working in care. We must change the way care work is perceived (Like the Professional Care Workers' Day that NACAS run this...

I believe that everybody delivering care professionally should be registered. NACAS maintains a register of our members.  I will continue to campaign for a compulsory, national register of care workers. Care work is a profession of looking after peoples' lives and needs to be registered for the safety of everybody.

Workers’ pay should also be structured along the NHS grade to reflect the skill and responsibility that comes with the grade. All care workers should be paid at least NMW for all the hours...

Care work is a profession and it needs to be treated as such. Care workers deserve more respect and recognition for the work we do. We need to be included in the multidisciplinary teams that look after people as we often know them best and spend the most face-to-face time with them.

Care workers should be finally recognised as skilled professionals. We deserve fit for purpose and standardised the training of better quality and higher level than Care Certificate that seems to assume that care workers are academically challenged. Training pathways for specialist care workers such as dementia or learning disabilities should be created. Training should be portable and care workers should not pay for annual mandatory sessions. People who wish to remain in very rewarding care...
