"Roll up! Roll up! Time for the Flu jab!"

The Government should advertise to the public, from September to January on a yearly basis, to all media outlets the importance of taking the yearly flu jab.

What would you like to happen to help you work without fear of bullying, discrimination or violence?

Hospital Trusts CEO,s  Heads of Nursing, Medical Directors should support their Occupational Health Flu Immunisation nurses who are being  are being met with derision, contempt and even open hostility from the hospital staff. Hospital staff who range from domestics, housekeepers, reception staff, nursing assistants, Staff Nurses, Sisters, Dentists, Consultants, who appear to take on the persona of  the  'Dr Hyde' character when the Flu Immunisation Nurses approach them on the wards to administer flu jabs.

It is baffling and bizarre to have a health industry staffed by personel who profess to care for vulnerable service users, but who in practice are vehemently against being vaccinated for their own protection, as well as  being responsible in safeguarding the health of sick patients.

Fear is being expressed in the form of intimidation by reluctant hospital staff who do not want to be vaccinated. The open verbal hostility is a form of abuse and  should not be tolerated by professional nurses who are merely carrying out their roles.

Thanks Patricia for your comment. You will see the deputy chief medical officer of England recently wrote a blog on the importance of flu vaccine for staff - https://dhscworkforce.crowdicity.com/blog/post/610424

Have you raised these concerns about the culture in the trust that you work?

Hello Adam,
Yes, a zero - tolerance approach of incivility from hospital staff, is being escalated and implemented by the Manager in support of her staff.
The incivility is a result of the lack of embedding education in hospital viewing flu as a dangerous illness for service users, which the Government should view as a serious Public Health deficit.
Instead Hospital Trusts have to rely on irritating "pop-ups" for staff to have their flu jab on the staff computer screens at a particular time of year, which is not good enough.
